Working downtown Chicago while in grad school I crossed the The Madison Street bridge every day on my way to work. The homeless are part of the landscape but they’re like ghosts, we are not really supposed to see them. They are seen and not seen all in the same glance.
I feel haunted by the homeless I walk past. Every time I look one of them in the eyes I
can’t stop thinking about God. I feel the presence of God when I look in the eyes of the
homeless. I cannot escape the feeling I am turning my back on God as I walk
past each and every homeless person.
